Horsetail – A Destructive Plant
Not only does horsetail spread quickly due to the tens of thousands of spores it produces each spring, these colonising new areas of your garden including any surrounding areas, it also spreads invisibly underground via its extensive rhizome system.
These rhizomes extending out into new and previouisly unaffected areas.
Horsetail rhizome grows deeply in the soil, with figures of two metres depth common place. These depths create a number of issues, one of which is that they are able to grow under solid structures such as paths and walls, to Horsetail these physical barriers simply do not exist.
This rhizome expansion spreads the impact of the Horsetail to ever greater areas. If this expansion reaches paths, patios, or tarmac drives do not be surprised to see the plant breaking through the surface causing significant and ever increasing damage.
There are few restrictions to the extent of which Horestail can grow.
The photograph below shows how Horsetail has simply grown up through this section of tarmac drive.

Horsetail Has No Boundaries
Horsetail rhizome grows deeply in the soil, enabling it to simply grow under hard landscaping such as walls and paths.

Rapid & Extensive Expansion
Horsetail is relentless, it is genetically programmed to grow increasing its impact year on year.
Ignoring Horsetail will make matters worse, it will not go away.
The rapid and prolific growth will unless stopped eventually completely fill the area.

Horsetail Will Affect Your Property Value
A property impacted by Horsetail will lower its value.
It will also make the sale of a property affected with Horsetail far more difficult, many potenial buyers would simply walk away.
It is highly likely that any visible signs of Horsetail would be flagged on a RICS house survey. Some lenders and insurance companies may have concerns about properties with invasive plant issues. This may affect the possibility of getting a mortgage or property insurance.
